3 Steps to Chroming

There are three main components to the chrome plating process, particularly for restoration and decorative work:

1a. Stripping: IF re-chroming, the old layers of chrome nickel and copper must be stripped away using chemical methods (activation)

1b. Cleaning and Degreasing: The part is cleaned of dirt, grease, and rust, often using alkaline cleaners and acid dips (etching) to ensure the plating adheres correctly

1c. Polishing: The netal is polished to a high sheen to remove scratches, pits, and dents, as the final chrome layer will mirror any imperfections underneath

2. Undercoating (copper and nickel plating). Before the chromium is applied, the part is usually coated with other metals to provide base protection and luster.

2a. Copper Plating: Copper is applied to fill in tiny pits, lines, and imperfections, ensuring a perfectly smooth surface.

2b. Buffing: The copper layer is often polished again to ensure a flawless base.

2c. Nickel Plating: One or more layers of nickel are added. Nickel is responsible for the corrosion resistance and provides the deep, reflective shine associated with chrome.

3. Chrome (Final Coat)

3a. Chromium bath: The part is immersed in a bath containing chromium acid and sulfuric acid

3b. Rinsing & Finishing: The cycle is considered a final bath stage that removes any remaining chemicals. The part is removed, thoroughly rinsed to remove all chemical residue, and finally polished to achieve the finished, mirror-like appearance.
